It's back--and better than ever. After a two-year break, Barney Flanders has switched sources for his Balnarring Pinot from the Silverwood vineyard to nearby Meyers Road. It's a cooler and more elevated site that provides Flanders with Pinot of more focus and drive. This north-facing parcel, on grey sandy loam begets a deft and nimble--if slightly denser--wine than Garagiste's Merricks Pinot.

The 2019 was wild-fermented with a high portion of whole berries--unlike the Merricks Pinot there is no whole-bunch influence here (Flanders explains that from this vineyard, the stems can easily dominate the fruit). There was a reasonably long maceration and yet gentle extraction--light pump-overs and a few gentle plunges. The wine was then matured in 300-litre hogsheads (roughly 20% new, François Frères) and spent ten months on lees before bottling (unfiltered).

It's a complex, sappy Pinot in which juicy red fruits, raspberry and cranberry, beetroot, red rose and fresh mint all play their part--as does some subtle, sweet and spicy oak. The palate is very bright and youthful, containing its fruit nicely with some fine, powdery tannins and good acid line. Overall, this is a very classy, cool and crunchy Pinot with terrific perfume, intensity and spice.

"We've travelled down the hill a bit when we head to Balnarring. We're not talking Tuerong territory, which is flatter and warmer, but we've come down from the undulating 'heights' of Main Ridge, Red Hill and Merricks. I like the way this combines velvet with grunt. There's a satiny aspect to both the fruit and the oak but there's so much tannin and savoury-spice that it has a broody kind of grumble to it. It's a muscle-car version of pinot noir. The fruit is dark, there are deli meat and c

Producers notes

Barnaby Flanders was a co-founder of Allies Wines in 2003, with some of the wines made under the Garagiste label. Allies has now gone its own way, and Barnaby has a controlling interest in the Garagiste brand. The future will focus on the Mornington Peninsula, and in particular grapes from Tuerong and Moorooduc in the north, with sand-based soils, the brown loam/red volcanic soils of Merricks and Merricks North in the middle, and the red volcanic soils of Red Hill and Main Ridge in the most elevated southern sector. Pinot noir and chardonnay will be the varieties used, and the wines will be made with wild yeasts, minimal handling and bottling without fining or filtration.

Shipping

Delivery is currently free of charge for both straight and mixed cases Australia Wide. (*excludes remote postcodes in WA and NT) (*excludes fundraising orders)

In most instances, a case is 12 bottles, including all mixed cases. Please note that the case quantity can vary between 3-12 bottles, depending on individual wine value and packaging configuration.

The number of bottles that define a straight case is marked in the product pricing page (i.e. "as part of any 6", "single bottle" and "3 or 6 or 12 bottle case").

Where all or part of the order is less than a case (as defined in the product pricing options, or 12 bottles if mixed) shipping will be charged as per your postcode at our cost price, this charge amount will be visible before your order confirmation and payment.

For example, a mixed bottle order of 18 bottles will include a freight charge for the second mixed case of only 6 bottles. A mixed 24 bottle order would be totally freight free.

Our intention is to offer free shipping to as many wine lovers as possible, however, given the geographically vast size of Australia, it is not possible for us to offer free shipping to 100% of postcodes.
