This climat is named after the small houses known as "Mazis" that used to be present on this parcel. It is the most northern of the Gevrey-Chambertin Grands Crus. Our parcel lies in the"Mazis Haut" (upper Mazis) and offers a unique terroir composed of an alluvial cone where scree from the valley has gathered. The wines produced in this climat are seductive, lively and very deep.
This wine reveals a deep ruby red hue and intense notes of oak, spice and red fruits on the nose. The palate offers the same aromas and the nose with a harmonious combination of fruity and oaky notes. With its smooth tannins and long, lingering finish, this well-balanced wine is the epitome of elegance.

"Faiveley's sizeable holding of 1.30ha has been boosted by a further 0.30 from Dupont-Tisserandot. Imperial purple colour and a magisterial bouquet, what a wealth of fruit! There is an iron rich touch too, quite a red soil. Very dense indeed, a really substantial Mazis which shows the quality of this terroir. Excellent structure with a good tannin-acid balance. One of the high points of the range is the 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, a striking wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of dark berries, tar, spices, grilled game, licorice, violets and cherries. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and lavish, with real concentration at the core, supple tannins, tangy acids and a long, mouthwatering finish. This was an impressive tasting with Eve and Erwan Faiveley and able winemaker Jérôme Flous. Likening the vintage to "a broader-shouldered 2007," a judgment with which I wholeheartedly concur, Flous presented a selection of some of the 2017 portfolio's high points. Supple, expressive and nicely integrated, the reds showed very well; and the two whites were simply superb. I also revisited a selection of 2016s at my office in the United States, wines that are more classically balanced and seemingly more consistent than Faiveley's 2015s. I'll be reporting more on the winemaking and vineyard changes that have ushered in a new era at this address—as well as publishing the results of a vertical of the emblematic Clos des Corton Faiveley—in the near future.
