Elio Altare La Villa Langhe Rosso 2017 - Piedmont
Bottle size: 750ml
Maximum buy quantity no greater than 6 bottles.
The Elio Altare Langhe ‘La Villa’ comes from the La Morra sub-region. Only 200-250 dozen bottles are produced each year from Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes planted on south-east facing slopes. The vineyard, on clay and tufa stone soils, is farmed organically, but along traditional lines.
The grapes are crushed and then macerated on skins for 3-4 days in temperature-controlled rotary fermenters before fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine is matured for 18 months in new French oak barriques before bottling unfined and unfiltered.
The Elio Altare ‘La Villa’ shows an intense, ruby-red colour and equally intense aromas of plums and berries, plus rose petals. The palate typically shows fresh red fruits, balanced tannins and attractive acidity boosted by the Barbera component.
‘This is a tremendous set of wines from Silvia Altare. The 2016s show just how promising that vintage is, while the 2015 Barolos are among the finest wines of the year. Readers are going to have a very hard time choosing among these wines, but that is a first-class problem. Frankly, I would be thrilled to own any of them.’ - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The Elio Altare 2017 Langhe La Villa is a blend of 60% Barbera (from the Larigi vineyard) and 40% Nebbiolo from the family's historic Arborina cru. The wine is soft, supple and rich, driven in part by 18 months of aging in new oak. The dark fruit component sits squarely across barbecue spice, smoke and tar. The wine achieves good balance thanks to the acidic freshness of Barbera and the natural structure of Nebbiolo. I opened my sample hours prior to tasting, and the results sang loud and clear.
