René Rostaing’s son Pierre has now taken up the reins of this domaine and is running it very successfully. In the winery, Pierre continues to use predominantly whole-bunch fermentation, and maturation in demi-muid barrels. The domaine’s style endures too, beautifully showcasing the terroir and producing extremely dark, rich and long-lived wines.

Pierre comments that in 2019, as with 2018, the grapes matured very quickly in the latter part of the growing season. This meant that, when it came to picking, the fruit was ripe and extremely healthy, resulting in wines of wonderful phenolic complexity.

Our notes

We tasted this recently and absolutely loved this wine. So seductive, with a silky mouthfeel and fine pepper and spice notes.  So much to enjoy here.  Highly Recommended. Scott

This is very solidly built, nearly bristling with briary energy along the edges while the core of steeped plum, cherry and currant fruit cruises through. Mouthwatering savory, tobacco and olive notes score the finish, all set against a lovely floral accent in the background. (JM) (2/2019)

Moving to the 2016s and starting with the 2016 Côte Rôtie Ampodium, this beautiful, silky, incredibly elegant wine has classic notes of red and black fruits, spring flowers, hints of bacon fat as well as green olive. Medium-bodied, about as graceful and elegant as they come, with sweet tannins and a great finish, it’s a no-brainer purchase to drink over the coming 10-15 years. I followed this bottle for two days and it does best with a decant if drinking any time soon. (12/2018)

91-93 points Vinous

Bright violet. Expressive black and blue fruit, floral pastille and peppery spice aromas display a bright mineral quality and a suggestion of woodsmoke. Intense blueberry and bitter cherry flavors show excellent clarity and spicy lift, picking up star anise and cola nuances on the back half. Delivers a serious punch of dark fruit flavor but comes off surprisingly lithe, and finishes with smooth tannins and strong tenacity. (JR) (6/2018)

Producers notes

Rene Rostaing worked in real estate before turning his hand to wine in 1971, but it wasn't until 2000 that he devoted all his time to his estate. Today, he looks after 7.4 hectares across 14 lieux-dits and 20 separate plots in Côte Rôtie. Since 1996 he produces just three wines-the Classic from a blend of 11 different lieux-dits, a seductive Côte Blonde and a densely structured La Landonne. On average 75% of the crop is destemmed and aging is split between 228-litre casks and 550-litre demi-muids, with only 10% of the oak being new. The wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Beautifully detailed wines that show restraint and elegance are the hallmarks of the estate.
