A Chardonnay lovers dream, brilliant value and hard to beat. A Wine Experience top pick!

Citrus driven chardonnay with complex flinty, toasty and biscuit notes derived from extended barrel aging on full solids.  Vibrant, lively acidity delivers a focused palate which unfurls and exposes intense citrus flavours with an underlying brioche and hazelnut influence.

Our notes

Ok… we don’t say this lightly, if we ever say it at all, but is this the best value Chardonnay in the world at the moment? The reviews have been electric, with Jancis Robinson MW comparing and preferring it to a $800 dollar bottle of Coche Dury Meursault 2010 and a $350 dollar bottle of Coche Dury Bourgogne Blanc 2011 from Burgundy!!! Coche Dury is arguably the most sought after and rarest White Burgundy in the world. Literally only a few dozen wines ever make it to Australia every year, and they are fiercely fought over by high end restaurants and elite collectors.

So how did this humble New Zealand Chardonnay [admittedly made by the brilliant ex-Cloudy Bay duo James Healy and Ivan Sutherland] impress Master of Wine Jancis Robinson so much that she was willing to throw Coche Dury, the Master, under the bus? In anycase we tried it a few days ago and it is a stunning chardonnay, complex, multilayered, beautifully constructed, and we could see, especially in a blind tasting, how it could undo the legends.

Another exceptional, burgundy-beating Kiwi Chardonnay. Definitely not shying away from matchstick on the nose, but it costs one heck of a lot less than a Coche wine. Very crystalline with good fruit focus on the mid palate. Very far from sweet. Crisp and rewarding. Great balance and fans out on the finish.

One of the top chardonnay wines in New Zealand, generally speaking. Indeed, Dog Point in general excels at its quarries. This one is the for the flint and mineral fans. Strong slate and graphite scents, lemon and apple underlying. The palate is racy, whipcracked with citrus/white flesh stone fruit, charged with that flinty mineral thing going on. Sheesh, it’s got some velocity too. In its style, it’s done brilliantly. A fancy racing car of a wine. Cellar long too.

Ripe, stylish and quite complex chardonnay with grapefruit, white peach, nectarine, bran biscuit and subtle mineral and oyster shell flavours. An elegant and appealing wine with an ethereal texture and lengthy finish. Delicious now but might even get a little better with a few years bottle age.

Bright, full, pale golden-yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is full with rich, ripe and rounded aromas of white stonefruits and citrus fruits entwined with a complex layer of creamy barrel-ferment and nutty oak in an amalgam of gunflint and mineral reductive complexities. This has richness and breadth and is well-proportioned. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich, mouthfilling flavours of white and yellow stonefruits and citrus fruits melded with a layering
