Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 - Margaret River
Alc: 12.5%
Closure: Screw cap
Bottle size: 750ml
98 Points - James Halliday Top 100 2022
The 2020 Diana Madeline vintage was hot and dry. For the old block cabernet sauvignon vines these drought like conditions resulted in the vines producing small berries, and hence the vines were low yielding – .i.e. bunch numbers were average but with low berry weight. This produced a wine of elegance, balance and perfume… effortless.
Harvest dates included 2 Moon Opposite Saturn events and two Full Moon’s – one being a fruit day perigee and the other a Moon Opposite Saturn flower day. These took place from 8th February until 10th march.
The blend is 92% cabernet sauvignon, 4% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, and 1% malbec.
Closed tanks, open fermenters, barrels and amphora were all used in the fermentation process, and the period of skin contact time lasted from 10 to 99 days depending on the batch of wine.
This wine spent 13 Months in 50% new oak in a mixture of barriques and puncheons, with some biodynamic oak featuring.
No additions of yeast, acid, or malolactic acid were made to this wine.

Reviews
"Diana Madeline. The name evokes a lot of emotions, for what the woman stood for then and what the wine stands for now. The 2021 vintage equals 50 years of cabernet sauvignon plantings at Cullen. When released in early 2023, it was on what would have been her 100th birthday. It’s a wine that can come from nowhere else, so strong is its sense of place. Expect to swoon over aromas of roses, violets and mulberries doused in baking spices, a ferruginous quality as much as detailed if persuasive tannins. It’s complex, complete and structured. Gosh, what a wine. What a woman. The perfect combination." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Very deep, bright purple-red colour; wonderful fragrance of red and blue fruits, violets and subtle herbal notes, the palate is very full bodied and loaded with tannins, a big wine of awesome concentration and arresting structure, with terrific drive and power. Long, long finish. It's just a babe and has a big future. This really has some wow factor" - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

Producers notes
The philosophy of Cullen Wines is to search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. The maritime climate, rocky soils, dry farming and biodynamic practices all help to create individual and diverse wine styles which are unique to Cullen.
The maritime climate of Margaret River allows a near perfect environment in which to grow the finest quality grapes.
The rocky soils produce low yielding intensely flavoured grapes and the flavour of these grapes is what creates the fabric for the wine style at Cullen.
The vines are dry farmed, helping to ensure maximum fruit quality, and all pruning and harvesting are done by hand with great care. Quality is paramount and when the hand-harvested grapes arrive at the winery from the vineyard, they are sorted again to ensure that only the best goes into the bottle.
Biodynamic practices and minimal intervention apply to both vineyard and winery with all wines being naturally fermented. As time passes, a greater understanding of the vineyard and grapes is gained and this makes possible the creation of a more individual wine style.
